To hear their little voices squeal with excitement over their hotel stay was heart-warming. The kids opened the door to the room and were BLOWN AWAY! Not too much walking around, like some other water park resorts we have been to. This was a PERFECT location for little legs. The kids found the room first, which was located on the first floor, close to the arcade, locker rooms and stairs to go up to the lobby. ![]() As soon as we did, I got the email that our room was ready! We could get settled in our room a bit and change in our own space. An email would be sent to my phone once it was ready. Our room wasn’t quite ready, but we had access to the water park + amenities. Our wrist bands were also our rooms keys, so that was an added bonus of not having to constantly wonder where the keys were! The wrist bands also gave us access to the water park for our stay. Upon arrival, the kids (yes, we pulled Carter from school early to come, too) were greeted with these adorable wolf ears (headbands) as we were checking into our room. It only took us 45 minutes to get to, which is a nice get-away, not to far, but far enough with kids asking, “Are we there yet?” It was cloudy, cold and sleety, a perfect day to escape the Wisconsin elements in a warm water park. We can often observe pastel shades of blue, pink, purple, and green in clouds that are generated when light is diffracted from water droplets in the clouds. A good example of this is the diffraction of sunlight by clouds that we often refer to as a silver lining, illustrated in Figure 1 with a beautiful sunset over the ocean. This phenomenon can also occur when light is “bent” around particles that are on the same order of magnitude as the wavelength of the light. The parallel lines are actually diffraction patterns. As the fingers approach each other and come very close together, you begin to see a series of dark lines parallel to the fingers. A very simple demonstration of diffraction of waves can be conducted by holding your hand in front of a light source and slowly closing two fingers while observing the light transmitted between them. This book uses the It is a product of the interference pattern of waves from separate slits and the diffraction of waves from within one slit. The solid line with multiple peaks of various heights is the intensity observed on the screen. One example of a diffraction pattern on the screen is shown in Figure 4.11. We refer to such a missing peak as a missing order. This gives rise to a complicated pattern on the screen, in which some of the maxima of interference from the two slits are missing if the maximum of the interference is in the same direction as the minimum of the diffraction. Interference and diffraction effects operate simultaneously and generally produce minima at different angles. In other words, the locations of the interference fringes are given by the equation d sin θ = m λ d sin θ = m λ, the same as when we considered the slits to be point sources, but the intensities of the fringes are now reduced by diffraction effects, according to Equation 4.4. The diffraction pattern of two slits of width a that are separated by a distance d is the interference pattern of two point sources separated by d multiplied by the diffraction pattern of a slit of width a. Although the details of that calculation can be complicated, the final result is quite simple: This gives the intensity at any point on the screen. That is, across each slit, we place a uniform distribution of point sources that radiate Huygens wavelets, and then we sum the wavelets from all the slits. To calculate the diffraction pattern for two (or any number of) slits, we need to generalize the method we just used for a single slit. In this section, we study the complications to the double-slit experiment that arise when you also need to take into account the diffraction effect of each slit. ![]() However, if you make the slit wider, Figure 4.10(b) and (c) show that you cannot ignore diffraction. ![]() Therefore, it was reasonable to leave out the diffraction effect in that chapter. If the slit is smaller than the wavelength, then Figure 4.10(a) shows that there is just a spreading of light and no peaks or troughs on the screen. We assumed that the slits were so narrow that on the screen you saw only the interference of light from just two point sources. When we studied interference in Young’s double-slit experiment, we ignored the diffraction effect in each slit. Determine the relative intensities of interference fringes within a diffraction pattern.Describe the combined effect of interference and diffraction with two slits, each with finite width.By the end of this section, you will be able to: ![]() Overall, while Equinox does satisfy customers needs, employees will always be put second if not last. Wanting a commercial hit, Bowie hired Nile Rodgers (pictured in 1999) to co-produce the album. Although RCA was willing to re-sign, alongside Columbia and Geffen Records, Bowie signed a new contract with EMI America Records for an estimated $17 million. Having grown increasingly dissatisfied with the label, who he felt was "milking" his back catalogue, he was also eager for the September 1982 expiration of his 1975 severance settlement with his old manager Tony Defries. Scary Monsters was Bowie's final studio album for RCA Records, his label since Hunky Dory (1971). The musical ideals from these artists would greatly influence the new album. During filming for the latter, he grew fond of artists from the 1950s and 1960s, including James Brown, Buddy Guy, Elmore James and Albert King. During the year, Bowie filmed appearances in The Hunger and Merry Christmas, Mr. Recorded in August 1981 and transmitted in March 1982, Bowie also recorded an accompanying soundtrack EP, released through RCA in February to coincide with the transmission. In July 1981, he collaborated with Giorgio Moroder for " Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", the title song of the Paul Schrader film Cat People (1982), and in the same session, recorded " Under Pressure" with the rock band Queen. Let's Dance was released to massive commercial success, reaching number one in numerous countries, and turned Bowie into a major superstar it remains Bowie's best-selling album. The album contains three cover songs: Iggy Pop's " China Girl", which Bowie and Pop had recorded together for the latter's The Idiot (1977) Metro's "Criminal World" and a reworking of " Cat People (Putting Out Fire)", originally recorded by Bowie and Giorgio Moroder in 1982 for the film of the same name. Musically, Let's Dance has been described as a post-disco record, with elements of dance-rock, dance-pop and new wave. For the first time ever, Bowie only sang and played no instruments. The sessions featured players from Chic and then-unknown Texas blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan on lead guitar. The album was recorded in December 1982 at the Power Station in New York City. Wanting a fresh start, he chose Nile Rodgers of the band Chic to co-produce his next record. By 1982, he left RCA Records out of dissatisfaction and signed with EMI America.
